* first, divides errors into performance and competence. "performance" errors are what they call any errors that are not systematic (or, in other words, errors that don't fit into their system and that they don't try to model).
Then, address competence errors using two axes: Language Influence (interlanguage vs intralanguage) and Language Subsystem (phono, morph, lex, etc).
This article is purely descriptive--makes no attempt to build a predictive system.
