Systematic assessment of drug safety during pregnancy is lacking, as are rigorous and comprehensive studies of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics to guide drug selection and dosing across pregnancy. Renal and hepatic clearances of many drugs change markedly during pregnancy and pitfalls may complicate routine therapeutic monitoring of some drugs during pregnancy.
