X Abstract

This paper gives examples of how data devel-oped to describe the original library items (not the digital surrogates) is manipulated at the Li-brary of Congress (LC) in order to make those records more useful for presentation of the digital surrogates. This includes the addition of some data purely for the functionality of the site and some data to help end users with their information seeking activities. The examples are drawn from the experiences of the Global Gateway production team and their work in creating collaborative international digital li-brary projects. Most of this work has been done on the Meeting of Frontiers web site, an online Russian-American bilingual digital li-brary (http://frontiers.loc.gov/).
